Upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game Danganronpa 2×2 is changing its physical release from a traditional game cartridge to a Game-Key Card, with publisher Spike Chunsoft canceling and refunding certain physical orders as a result. The publisher confirmed the change and explained that the decision was not made lightly.

Before the Nintendo Switch 2 launched, Nintendo revealed that the console would support two different types of physical cartridges: standard game cards and Game-Key Cards.

Standard cartridges contain the necessary game files, allowing players to install and play the game directly from the physical media. Game-Key Cards, meanwhile, essentially function as physical licenses that require the game to be downloaded to the console. The card must also remain inserted to play the downloaded game.

While some Switch 2 games have continued to use traditional cartridges, others have adopted the Game-Key Card format. Now, Danganronpa 2×2 is joining the latter group after Spike Chunsoft announced a change to its physical release plans.

In a post on social media, Spike Chunsoft revealed that physical copies of the Nintendo Switch 2 version were originally planned to use standard game cartridges. However, the publisher has now changed its plans, with physical copies using Game-Key Cards in every region where the game will be sold. Spike Chunsoft did not provide a specific explanation for the decision, only stating that the change was "unavoidable."

The change has already affected physical pre-orders in the United States. All orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 version placed through the publisher's Shopify US Store have been canceled, with customers receiving refunds. Once their refunds have been processed, US customers who still want the game are being encouraged to place new orders through the Shopify US Store.

Customers who purchased the game through the Shopify UK or EU stores, as well as those who ordered through other retailers, will still receive their copies, but those copies will now contain Game-Key Cards instead of standard cartridges. Spike Chunsoft has advised customers who want to modify their pre-orders to contact the retailer where they originally placed their orders.

The announcement has understandably frustrated some fans, particularly those who specifically chose the physical version because it was originally expected to contain the full game on the cartridge. Some players have said they will not place another order after receiving their refunds, while others who purchased the game from different retailers have indicated that they intend to cancel their pre-orders.

For now, Spike Chunsoft has not announced any changes to the physical PlayStation release of Danganronpa 2×2. The reason behind the Switch 2 cartridge change also remains unclear.

The timing is particularly notable as Game-Key Cards have become a contentious issue among physical game collectors. Although they provide a physical object, the cards do not contain the complete game and require players to download the necessary data. This has raised concerns about long-term access, particularly if the servers required to download or authenticate games eventually become unavailable.

Those concerns have become increasingly prominent as the industry continues moving toward digital distribution. Players have questioned whether digital purchases and Game-Key Cards provide meaningful ownership or instead function primarily as licenses to access software. Similar concerns have emerged outside gaming, with Sony expected to remove hundreds of movies from the PlayStation Store later this year, potentially leaving customers without access to previously purchased content.

For Danganronpa 2×2 players, the immediate issue is much simpler: anyone expecting a traditional Switch 2 cartridge will now receive a Game-Key Card instead. With US pre-orders being refunded entirely, affected customers may want to keep an eye on their refunds before deciding whether to place a new order.
