Final Fantasy XIV is approaching a major turning point. Its upcoming Evercold expansion, also known as Patch 8.0, is shaping up to be one of the most significant updates the MMORPG has received since A Realm Reborn transformed the game in 2013.
With the Tokyo Fan Festival approaching, more details are expected to emerge before the expansion's planned January 2027 release. Even so, Square Enix has already revealed several changes that could reshape how players experience Eorzea, from the way combat works to how the main story unfolds.
Whether you have spent years mastering multiple jobs or are considering jumping into Final Fantasy XIV for the first time, Evercold is promising a noticeably different experience. Here is what we know so far.
Evercold will introduce two new jobs, with the first already revealed: Bastion.
Bastion is a Tank job that wields a distinctive weapon called the Skyltborg. Imagine a gunblade redesigned as a gunshield, complete with a blade. The weapon allows Bastion to defend itself with massive shields, attack enemies from a distance using bursts of aether energy, and engage opponents in close combat.
The result is a job that blends defensive abilities with ranged attacks and melee combat. That combination could make Bastion an interesting option for players who enjoy protecting their teammates without giving up the opportunity to deal damage.
Square Enix has yet to officially reveal the second new job, although it has confirmed that it will specialize in physical ranged damage. Some fans believe it could use a crossbow, but that remains speculation until the developers share more information.
With two new jobs on the way, players will have fresh options to explore and new ways to approach the game's challenging encounters.
For many players, creating a character they genuinely connect with is part of what makes Final Fantasy XIV special. The game's glamour system, which lets players customize their appearance through outfits and equipment, has become a major attraction in its own right.
Evercold is taking that personal expression further with additional character customization options.
Planned additions include the ability to customize Au Ra horns, adjust nose shading, and apply face paint. Players will also gain more control over colors for their characters' eyes, hair, and skin tones.
Customization will extend beyond appearance, too. Players will be able to personalize certain animations, including teleport effects and other job-specific actions.
These changes could make characters feel more individual, whether players prefer elaborate fantasy looks, subtle details, or a signature style that reflects their favorite job.
Evercold is also changing how players progress through the main story.
Previous expansions have generally followed a linear structure, guiding players through areas and major story events in a set order. In Evercold, players will have more freedom to decide where they go next.
In an example shared by Square Enix, players who finish one area can choose to visit three different destinations in whatever order they prefer. Conversations with non-playable characters will also reflect the choices players have made.
To ensure that the experience remains balanced regardless of the route players choose, each area will automatically adjust its content to match their levels.
This approach could make the journey feel more personal, giving players greater control over how they explore the world and experience its story. It also introduces an interesting change for longtime fans who are accustomed to following the main quest in a specific sequence.
One of the recurring criticisms of Final Fantasy XIV's combat is that some jobs can feel too similar in how their abilities work. Although each role has its own theme and visual identity, many players have felt that the underlying actions and rotations have become increasingly alike.
Square Enix is addressing this with a new system called Evolved combat.
The goal is to give jobs more individuality while streamlining their abilities. That could mean more distinctive ways to play each role, along with fewer buttons and simpler rotations to learn.
For experienced players, the changes could refresh familiar jobs and make combat feel more engaging. For newcomers, reducing the number of abilities they need to learn could make the game less intimidating.
Square Enix has not yet revealed the evolved versions of every job, so the full impact of the changes remains unclear.
Importantly, players who prefer the current combat system will still have an alternative. Evercold will retain the existing style through a mode called Reborn, allowing those who enjoy the familiar abilities and rotations to continue using them.
Leveling multiple jobs is one of the most rewarding parts of Final Fantasy XIV, but keeping several characters' roles or jobs equipped with suitable gear can also demand a considerable amount of time.
Evercold aims to make that process less repetitive by changing how players earn rewards and manage equipment.
Currently, players can complete daily quests to collect currency used to purchase higher-level gear. The expansion will replace this system with a weekly structure in which players choose activities they can complete on their own schedule. Completing those activities awards points that can be exchanged for equipment.
The change could give players more flexibility, especially those who cannot log in every day or prefer to play in longer sessions when they have free time.
Gear progression across multiple jobs is also getting an adjustment. Players will be able to reflect the highest item level they own onto their other max-level jobs, making it easier to bring additional jobs up to speed without repeating the same gearing process for each one.
There is a limit: this system will not automatically apply further enhancements such as materia. Players will still need to work toward their strongest possible equipment builds.
Even so, reducing some of the repetitive work could make experimenting with different jobs more appealing.
Few companions are as recognizable in the Final Fantasy series as the chocobo, and Final Fantasy XIV players have long been able to travel alongside their feathered friends.
Until now, however, those companions have not been available as combat party members in dungeons.
Evercold is set to change that by expanding the companion system to allow chocobos to join dungeon runs.
This could make it easier to tackle certain content with a smaller group. For example, players may be able to enter a dungeon with just one other person, while their two chocobos fill the remaining party slots.
That change could be particularly useful for players who prefer adventuring with friends rather than waiting for a full group through the Duty Finder.
It also gives chocobo companions a more meaningful role in the adventure, making them feel like more than just trusty mounts along the way.
With new jobs, deeper character customization, a less linear story, redesigned combat, and changes to gear progression, Evercold is aiming to update several of the systems that define Final Fantasy XIV.
Some of these changes could make the game more inviting for newcomers, while others are clearly aimed at longtime players who want more variety and flexibility after years of adventuring.
There is still plenty to learn before the planned January 2027 launch, and the upcoming Tokyo Fan Festival may provide a clearer picture of how all these systems will fit together.
For now, one thing is clear: Evercold is shaping up to be much more than a new chapter in the story. It could change how players customize their heroes, approach combat, and spend their time in one of the world's most popular MMORPGs.
