Why have cozy games
become so popular

Need a break? Cozy up and get comfy!

Do you still believe that a good game must include flashy boss fights, high scores, and timing? Because cozy games have become a favorite of the masses, and they have none of that. What they have is absolutely nothing but good vibes. Farming and fishing? Yes. Creating a sim family?
Yes. Taking care of a digital pet? Yes. Silence, relaxation,
and a sense of hollow productivity? Heck yes!

Our lives are filled with daily decisions, stressful situations,  and responsibilities. On top of that, the never-ending and all present digital connection that pulls you in constantly with its notification dings. The cozy games explosion is way bigger than you expect. It goes from 8 to 80.

Publishers now use words like “wholesome” and “relaxing” instead of “intense” or “competitive” to lure cozy game
fans because the market shows how valuable they are.
In this article, I will be sharing what makes cozy games special and popular. Hope you stay for the ride!

My silent companion

Cozy games have been in my life from the moment I could afford a cellphone that could store some games. One of my oldest memories with cozy games was playing Bounce while riding the train home after work. My battery was not the best, but it was more than enough for the game to keep me company on the way home, with nothing else on my mind but to guide this little red ball through the platforms and hoops. Minimal brain function.

It looks like something small, but those 15 to 20 minutes would allow my mind to leave the workload, daily struggles, and stress behind, and when I stepped out of the train, my mood had changed. It was lighter and a lot less stressed. Compared to the games we can play now, Bounce was medieval but effective. Now you can choose from an array of cozy games to keep you entertained for more years that you can live.

When did we start our obsession with digital softness?

Cozy games are not new. But they were never appreciated as they are now. The rise of video games brought to life furious competition first, rather than relaxation. It was all about headshots, scoreboards, and who could be the best. So what changed in the last few years? If we could pinpoint a moment that was fulcral in the cozy games’ rise was
the launch of Animal Crossing in March of 2020.

A couple of days later, the whole world went into lockdown. People found themselves stuck at home with nothing to do, and Nintendo offered them this cute little tropical island where people could escape to and be entertained for days on end. The game sold 11.8 million copies in its first 11 days after launch. But it was not just the escaping that made people devour the game. It was the companionship.

Because there could not be real-life gatherings anymore,
Animal Crossing served as a gathering spot for friends
and family. People used the game to celebrate birthdays, graduations, and even weddings in-game became a regular thing for many. The pandemic reminded people what cozy games were for, and since then, millions of people keep reaching out for that experience every day.

Did burnout create a new game genre?

Somewhere in between doomscrolling the daily news, long shifts at work, and playing games that thrive on a FOMO culture, people decided that their brains had turned to ash. But then they found a cute farm! Where fun was the only end result. And they never left.

The demand for cozy games comes from people looking for low-pressure digital spaces where they can hide away from the constant online interaction and everyday obligations.
Is not like everybody just decided that planting crops makes an amazing game. In a cozy game, you are allowed to be slow, to make mistakes, and do whatever at your own pace. You can log in for 10 min and leave feeling like you were

able to achieve something, and it was fun. It makes you feel lighter, not more depleted. Did you know that cozy spin-offs of well-known games are being launched because players are looking for softer alternatives to the genres they are used to playing?

The players want to keep playing but not with the intensity that they did before. Yes, the young kids still want that rush and adrenaline while playing, but unfortunately they do not really have adult money… The gaming industry will never lose a chance to make money, and if cozy-type games are what the people want, then that is exactly what they will
get. By the millions.

“If the game gives the player a cozy, warm feeling, then it fits.”

Here are your choices!

You must be wondering what kind of cozy games are out there for you to play. Fear not, I bring you two absolutely blissful and relaxing games that you can try right now.
You have literally millions of cozy games; most of them
can be pretty simple and straightforward. Run a tavern
and serve some beers? Can do. Or maybe you would
rather have your own hotel where guests come in and
out at a very relaxing pace? What about designing a
house and then creating a cute family that you can take
care of? All of these are real options that you can play.
For now, we stick to these too and hope it will not satisfy your cozy curiosity.

Stardew Valley state of mind

Stardew Valley is like a very good slow burn. In this game, nothing is rushed. You start by inheriting an old farm from
a family member that is located right next to a sleepy little town, and from then on, the game gives you an empty canvas. You decide what your rustic-looking farm turns out to be. If it will be a mapped-out grid of perfectly planted crops, a wild animal-filled ranch, or even a mix of it all.

You get a few crops and a rusty tool, and then you are free to explore the whole map and be as adventurous as you want. You can be super social or not at all. The game does not depend on it to keep you entertained. When will you go explore the mines? Today? Tomorrow? Finding some scary pixelated monsters takes a special adventurous mood day. Also, nothing will go bad or die if you just walk away from the game for some time, and whenever you are back,
you just pick up exactly where you left off.

Unpacking your stress out!

Unpacking might not be an obvious choice, but it is one of the purest cozy games out there. If tending to some crops is still too much for you, I found the game that will allow you to shut everything off and just let the unpacking vibes take over. What you do in-game is written in the name.
You unpack things. Item by item, you put them in their proper places, and that’s what you do. Room by room,
you decorate a whole house and move on to the next.

This game is in the picture next to the words “minimum brain activity.” No tutorial pop-ups, no boring dialogue,
and more importantly, no way to fail. You pull out books, kitchen gadgets, weird keepsakes, and everything else that
a house needs to be lived in and cherished. As you fill out the rooms, you start noticing some changes. A closet that once held 2 people clothes is now down to one. A diploma that used to hang on the wall disappears.

The game tells you the story of its inhabitants in its own slow and peaceful way. This game is cozy enough that you can play it half asleep but emotional in a way that is hard
to describe. Is amazing to see how our brain can detect these small changes and interpret them exactly as they happened.

All you need, simple and cozy

Looking at the big picture, the cozy games genre that lived in the background is now a trending genre for real reasons. The pandemic made it grow faster, but it is this “productivity culture” that we live in that will make cozy games stay for a long time. Being burned out is so intertwined in our lives that we started craving hobbies that don’t ask anything of us. There is a whole generation that is reshaping video games and how we interact with them in our downtime.

Underneath all the farming. The fishing and refurnishing houses, lies something deeper. The offer of something much simpler. The permission to slow down, be bad at something, and rest without guilt. I have a feeling by
the look of how our society his going that this “trend” will
be staying for a long time. Hope you enjoy this deep dive
on cozy games and now see it as something much more important and meaningful than just easy games to kill
time. See you on my next deep dive!
