A community-made BioShock co-op mod now allows two players to experience the full campaign of BioShock Remastered together on PC through Steam. Created by solo modder VoidCrownStudios, the mod, called Bioshock Together, is currently in an early Alpha Playtest state and supports both online and LAN multiplayer.
Originally released in 2007, BioShock is a first-person shooter that combines gunplay with Plasmid abilities in the underwater city of Rapture. Although the series includes multiple entries, the first game was designed as a single-player experience. The new fan-made modification introduces cooperative gameplay, allowing two players to face enemies and progress through the campaign together.
According to the source, Bioshock Together allows two players to fight enemies such as Splicers and Big Daddies, work together on machine hacking, and collect story-related quest items. The mod is designed to let players progress through Rapture as a team, with synchronized interactions between their game worlds.
VoidCrownStudios has confirmed that the mod has been used to complete the entire BioShock Remastered campaign from start to finish. The source also states that the experience includes actual character models and synchronized world interactions, although the modification remains in its early testing phase.
The mod also allows each player to make their own decisions involving Little Sisters, including whether to rescue or harvest them. Other features include a Partner Location Marker, synchronization pauses when players explore separate levels, and support for hosting games over LAN or online.
To use Bioshock Together, both players must own BioShock Remastered on Steam for Windows and install the same version of the mod. They must also select the same difficulty when starting the game. According to the source, neither player can have any other mods active or installed while using the modification.
Fan-made modifications have provided additional ways to experience established games, with titles such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Garry's Mod, and Minecraft among the examples mentioned in the source. The new BioShock modification offers another way for players to revisit the original game's campaign with a friend.
Whether Bioshock Together will attract more players to the nearly 20-year-old title remains to be seen. The source also points to a fan-made VR mode for BioShock as another community project that has attracted interest from new players. Fans can follow VoidCrownStudios for potential updates to the co-op mod and other community developments related to the series.
