As development on Cyberpunk 2 continues, game director Gabe Amatangelo has offered a glimpse into how the sequel is evolving at CD Projekt Red. In a recent blog post, Amatangelo discussed the meaning of cyberpunk and his desire to explore themes of dehumanization, while explaining how the growing development team is helping shape the game.
Rather than sticking rigidly to his original concept, Amatangelo wants the people working on Cyberpunk 2 to bring their own perspectives and ideas to the project. As more developers join the team, the sequel is becoming a collective creative effort rather than simply an extension of one person's vision.
“I had the idea of Cyberpunk 2 in the beginning, but it evolves as I involve more people,” Amatangelo explained. He added that empowering individual team members to contribute has helped transform the project into something that reflects the people creating it.
For a franchise built around questions of identity, humanity, and technology, that collaborative approach could prove particularly meaningful. The cyberpunk genre often examines what people risk losing as technology becomes more deeply embedded in everyday life, and Amatangelo's comments suggest those ideas remain central to the sequel's direction.
Amatangelo also spoke about the personal importance of video games and their ability to influence how people see the world. He hopes the medium will continue inspiring players, opening their minds, and motivating future generations.
“Video games impacted my life. They opened my mind, and got me motivated and excited,” he said. “And I want to make sure that doesn’t go away for this generation or the next.”
That perspective offers a glimpse into the creative ambitions behind Cyberpunk 2. Beyond building a compelling futuristic world, the team appears interested in creating an experience that stays with players after they put down the controller.
However, CD Projekt Red has yet to announce a release date, and details about the sequel's story, characters, and gameplay remain limited. For now, Amatangelo's comments provide a better sense of the ideas guiding development than the specific features players can expect.
Cyberpunk 2 is one of several major projects in development at CD Projekt Red. The studio is also working toward a new Witcher trilogy, with The Witcher 4 set to begin a planned six-year release window for all three games.
The company also has a significant lesson to keep in mind as it develops its next Cyberpunk game: the original Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020 with serious technical problems, particularly on older consoles. The troubled release damaged the studio's reputation and required months of fixes and improvements.
Over time, however, Cyberpunk 2077 underwent a substantial transformation. Ongoing updates improved the experience, while the acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion gave players another reason to return to Night City. The game's recovery demonstrated the potential of its world and characters, even after a difficult start.
Now, the franchise has more projects bringing attention back to its futuristic setting. The second season of the animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is scheduled to premiere on October 20, 2026, and a Cyberpunk 2077 movie adaptation has also been announced.
With renewed interest in the franchise and a larger team contributing to its next chapter, Cyberpunk 2 has an opportunity to build on what made its predecessor memorable while learning from its mistakes. Whether the sequel can deliver on that potential remains to be seen, but Amatangelo's comments suggest its creative direction is still developing alongside the people bringing it to life.
