PlayStation’s Platinum Trophy is no longer unique among the major gaming platforms. Xbox has introduced Mythic Achievements, a new reward for players who unlock every other achievement in a game. Microsoft launched its achievement system with the Xbox 360 in 2005. Players earn Gamerscore by completing challenges, and the total appears on their profile as a record of their accomplishments. Sony introduced Trophies for PlayStation in 2008, adding Platinum Trophies as an extra reward for unlocking every other Trophy in a game.
Since then, Platinum Trophy hunting has become a popular hobby among completionist players. Finishing an entire game’s Trophy list provides a final reward that is separate from the individual challenges themselves, making it one of PlayStation’s most recognizable features. Xbox Mythic Achievements now offer a similar incentive. The feature is currently available to Xbox Insiders, meaning it has not yet been released to every player. Once it receives a wider rollout, Xbox users will have their own reward for completing a game’s entire achievement list.
One notable advantage of Mythic Achievements is their backward compatibility with older games. The system can apply retroactively to titles released as far back as the Xbox 360, allowing developers to add the new reward without rebuilding existing achievement lists. For players, this means that older Xbox games may receive their completionist reward automatically. Fans who have already unlocked every achievement in a supported title could potentially see a Mythic Achievement added without needing to replay the game. The feature follows years of requests from Xbox players who wanted a direct equivalent to the Platinum Trophy. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed plans for the system in August, and the first version has now entered testing through the Xbox Insider program.
The change removes one of PlayStation’s longest-standing advantages over Xbox. For nearly two decades, PlayStation was the only major console platform to reward players with a separate achievement for completing an entire game. That distinction will disappear once Mythic Achievements become broadly available. It remains to be seen whether Sony will respond with new features for its Trophy system. The company surveyed players about possible Trophy changes earlier this year, but it has not yet announced any updates. With Xbox now offering a comparable completionist reward, PlayStation may need to find another way to make its system stand out.
