Square Enix has announced and released Wave 2 of its Final Fantasy 9: Melodies of Life music box, giving fans another small but heartfelt way to celebrate the classic RPG. The collectible is available now through Square Enix’s official North American store for $25.99.
The music box plays “Melodies of Life,” the beloved theme associated with Zidane and Garnet’s romance. Its front features silhouettes of the two characters, honoring the relationship that sits at the emotional center of Final Fantasy 9.
At about 2.36 inches tall, 2.09 inches wide, and 1.57 inches deep, the piece is intentionally compact. Square Enix says the artwork in its music box collection is inspired by scenes connected to the featured songs, making each box feel like a miniature tribute rather than a standard piece of merchandise.
This is not Square Enix’s first Final Fantasy 9 music box. The store also offers versions based on “Not Alone,” featuring Zidane with his companions, and “Roses of May,” centered on Beatrix. Other Square Enix classics, including Chrono Trigger, have also received their own music boxes, giving fans different ways to revisit the company’s most memorable soundtracks.
The new release comes amid ongoing uncertainty around a possible Final Fantasy 9 remake. Reporting from RPG Site founder Alex Donaldson claimed that a remake had once been “very far along” before development stalled, though Square Enix has never confirmed the project’s existence or said why it stopped.
For now, the music box is a reminder that Final Fantasy 9 remains close to fans’ hearts more than 25 years after its original release. It may not be the full modern remake many are hoping for, but it offers an accessible way to revisit one of the franchise’s most recognizable songs—and one of its most enduring love stories.
