REVEALING THE MONSTERS WITHIN

Our minds can be our greatest ally or our worst enemy. The voices and images in your head can sometimes seem more real than what actually is. You are not alone in experiencing this dreaded reality. We all suffer from our past and wish we could forget the horrors we had to experience. Thankfully, they are just in our heads, and many use all sorts of ways to overcome those thoughts.

But what if you are forced to relive those horrific moments, or watch them unfold before your very eyes? A place that could recall your life’s worst experiences, trauma, pain, and guilt. This is what awaits you in the mysterious town of Silent Hill.
A town with a peculiar environment that is cold and surrounded by fog. A place that screams of silence and an eerie evil that lingers all around.

Silent Hill is a cursed town with dark origins and deep lore. This article will explore the origins of this purgatory town and all those who have had the misfortune of ending up there. We will look into the experiences of certain main characters and the horrors they face in this dreaded place. SPOILER ALERT! Anything you read after this point may contain spoilers for Silent Hill.

“In my restless dreams,
I see that town…Silent Hill
“
– Mary Sunderland

A Brutal History In A Spiritual Land

The mystical town of Silent Hill had always been abundant in spiritual energy. Once inhabited by Native American tribes, the land served as a site for spiritual ceremonies and communicating with their deceased ancestors. They called the place “The Place of the Silent Spirits”.

In the late 17th century, the native tribes
were brutally driven out by European
colonizers who settled on that land.
One of the settlers, Jennifer Carol,
was obsessed with the land’s
strange spiritual phenomenon
and eventually became
the founder of the cult
known as The Order.

She was eventually burned
at the stake for practicing
witchcraft but had some
loyal followers already
spreading her dark and
evil practices in secret.

The fear of blood tends to create fear for the flesh.

The Evil Practices
Of The Occult

The Order evolved throughout the centuries and blended the beliefs of the Native American tribal mythology with Christian doomsday theology and dark satanic occultism. The Order believes that humanity is doomed to misery and suffering until it achieves its goal.

Their ultimate goal is to summon their “God” to usher in “Paradise”. They believe their God’s arrival will end all suffering. It seemed like any other religious concept until you know how they go about achieving this. They believe that God requires a human vessel, and the sacrifice and suffering of that human is what will bring God to earth and end all suffering.

This absurd belief that requires the suffering of an innocent life is what will end suffering for all. The Order becomes relentless in pursuing this goal and murders, abuses, and tortures many to bring this prophecy to life.

This pain shall create the salvation of all mankind.

Sacrificing A Child
To Summon A God

Silent Hill games are not for the faint of heart. There are some gruesome, graphic scenes that genuinely make you question why you chose
to play this game, but the story is so incredibly captivating that your curiosity cannot help but
want to find out more. Now, back to the story.

The Order grew into an organized religion with various sects, saints, and churches. We are then introduced to a priestess named Dahlia Gillespie. She had a daughter, Alessa, who was born with unique, immense psychic and telekinetic abilities. Dahlia viewed her child as the perfect biological vessel for the birth of her “God” and to become
the fulfillment of the prophecy.

She locks her 7-year-old daughter in a basement and sets the house on fire as a summoning ritual
to force the birth of the cult’s God through her daughter’s womb. It only gets worse from here.

I guess I really don’t care if it’s dangerous or not. I’m going to town either way.

The Splitting of The Soul

The aftermath of this evil ritual turns Silent Hill from a dark cult story into a horrific nightmare. During the fire, the ritual was almost successful, but Alessa strenuously resisted. She could not escape physically, so she used her psychic ability as a defense mechanism to prevent the deity from being born. In that moment, she fractured her own soul, splitting it into two.

One half of the soul remained in Alessa’s charred and burnt body. This half carried all her psychic abilities as well as her agonizing pain and rage. The detached half of her soul kept her purity, innocence, and her unmatched capacity for love. This half of her soul manifested as a beautiful, healthy, newborn baby girl outside of Silent Hill. A baby girl that was discovered by Harry Mason and his wife while on holiday. They adopted her and named her Cheryl Mason.

As Alessa’s soul was split, the deity that was to be summoned through her body could not be born and remained dormant. It could be born only if the two halves of the soul were reunited.

I was weak. That’s why I needed you… needed someone to punish me for my sins.

A Pain That Manifested Into The Real World

In order to cover up this botched ritual sacrifice, Dahlia conspired with Dr. Michael Kaufman to bribe the media and pronounce Alessa dead due
to a fire that was caused by a “boiler explosion”.
In reality, they locked her up in the basement of
a hospital and continued to severely torture her with dark magic for seven years. Dahlia kept her
in a burnt state without any pain medication.

She tortured her daughter to cause the other half
of the soul to return to Silent Hill. She kept her alive but forced her to live in agonizing pain and suffering. All this stems from the absurd and evil rituals of The Order. The town was different to begin with, but Alessa’s intense suffering warped the town’s spiritual energy, fracturing its reality into separate dimensions.

The first dimension of reality is the Real World, where everyone in the town just goes about their lives, oblivious to the hidden horrors.

The other two realities are the manifestations of the suffering Alessa endures. There is the mystic Fog World: silent, abandoned, and with endless falling ash instead of real fog. A manifestation of the trauma suffered by Alessa during the fire.

There is also the Otherworld: a reality peeled back to reveal a town with rusty grates, blood splattered everywhere, and rotting flesh. A manifestation of Alessa’s torturous seven years in the hospital.

The Curse On
The Broken

The town of Silent Hill became a spiritual power that could physically bring out a person’s inner psyche, mirroring the worst of themselves and making them live in a state of perpetual guilt
and trauma. This is perfectly depicted in James Sunderland’s journey in Silent Hill 2.

James receives a mysterious letter from his wife, who had passed away 3 years ago due to illness. The letter convinces James that she is still alive and in Silent Hill, waiting for him. He goes to the town in pursuit of her. He meets the other characters in the town and notices a pattern among them. They are all suffering some kind
of traumatic experience and cannot seem to get out of it. James himself starts facing monsters that are representations of his own lived trauma.

Each monster relates to James’s memory of Mary and her illness. For example, there is a monster with a pyramid head that is called Executioner.
It acts as a direct manifestation of James’s guilt and his need to punish himself. The game has a calm pace towards discovering the truth about James, and it may be confusing at the start,
but as the story unravels, the player will find themselves deeply empathizing with James.

When I first got here, I thought I finally found a place where I could rest.

The Guilt of Sin

Across Toluca Lake, he finally reaches Lakeview Hotel, the spot where he and Mary spent years
ago in Silent Hill and the place Mary refers to in her letter. At the front desk, he finds a note that reveals a videotape had been left behind during
his last stay with Mary. This leads him to room
312, the room he and Mary shared. In that room,
he finds nothing but a TV set and a VCR.

He plays the recovered videotape, and in that moment, the real truth about James is finally revealed. In the video, we see James sitting at
the bedside of Mary, watching her struggle
with her illness. James gently kisses Mary on her forehead before suffocating her with a pillow and ending her life of suffering. This revelation ties up all loose ends and clarifies James’s guilt and trauma.

His struggle to accept the fact that he murdered his wife is the catalyst that brought him to Silent Hill. The letter from Mary turned out to be nothing but a blank piece of paper. It was James’s psychological delusions and trauma that drove him to Silent Hill.

The truth is I hated you. I wanted you out of the way. I wanted my life back…

The Paradox of Fear

The twist in Silent Hill 2 is one of the best in this whole franchise. It was so incredibly well written and well designed that they remade the game in 2024. The remake kept most of the elements and the story of the original. Although it can be quite horrifying and creepy, many gamers have found a strange solace in the ambiance of Silent Hill. One cannot help but wonder: why are these survival horror games so intriguing to us?

The answer is the concept of Benign Masochism. This means a person is able to derive a positive experience or even pleasure from an inherently negative experience. An example would be like people loving the “burn” of chili pepper on their tongues despite the experience being torturous. It is a type of hedonic reversal that horror movies and games thrive on to be successful.

I can’t turn back now. This is no time to run away.

Benign Masochism

When your brain senses real danger, it puts your nervous system on high alert. But once the brain realizes that there is no danger, the fear becomes pleasurable. You start to enjoy the thrill because you know there is no actual threat to your life. This behavior can be found in various activities like extreme sports such as skydiving, bungee jumping, or even riding on a roller coaster.

These are activities that give a strong adrenaline rush that is quite enjoyable to the human brain. Even going to the gym or getting a deep-tissue massage is an example of how the brain falsely interprets pain as threats yet derives pleasure from the relief. This extends to horror movies and survival-horror games as well, and Silent Hill is a perfect example of a game that can bring out the benign masochism in you.

This game intentionally evokes anticipation and dread through its visuals and story, but it allows you to safely explore these negative emotions in the comfort of your own room. Silent Hill does an incredible job of deepening the sense of fear through its psychological elements.

Confronting Fear

Another major reason why we love horror survival games like Silent Hill is that the monsters are not just digital nightmares, but are representations of one’s own trauma, grief, anxiety, and guilt. It is as
if facing them through the game is some unlikely form of therapy. Research done by the American Psychological Association suggests that horror games may serve as a form of therapeutic exposure to help players manage symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and various general phobias.

It also enables players to perform under pressure. When to fight, when to flee, and what to sacrifice while being chased by macabre monsters that pop out of nowhere. It can also be an excellent training ground for the mind. These games are designed to encourage players to enhance their cognitive abilities under major stress and fear.

Silent Hill is one of those horror franchises that go beyond just survival and explore the psychological aspects of horror. It forces you to look within yourself and confront your own demons.
Or at least, it encourages you to.

I know what you are. I know why I needed you. But it’s all over now. I don’t need you anymore. I’m ready.

What Does Not Kill You, Makes You Stronger

Survival horror games can be masochistically fun, but they can also help you develop your strategic thinking skills, emotional regulation, and mental resilience. Whether you are battling monsters or confronting fear within, survival horror games like Silent Hill are made to challenge you.

The journey through Silent Hill will impact you in a way no other game will ever. It is not made to instill fear through traditional “jump scares” but through an unsettling purgatory way where personal guilt, trauma, and supernatural forces manifest into physical reality.

If you have read up to this point, I would assume you are a fan of Silent Hill or at least the horror survival genre. But if you have never played this game, I would highly encourage you to try it out. You will not only love the gameplay of this series but also develop a deep love for tragic characters.
