After nearly two decades of volunteer development, Star Wars Fate of the Galaxy has officially launched as a free space combat game for PC, Mac, and Linux. The project is a total conversion mod built on the open-source FreeSpace 2 engine and is available through its official website.
The developers say their goal is to capture the look and feel of Star Wars starfighter combat from the films. Players can fly for the Rebel Alliance, the Galactic Empire, or as an independent adventurer, choosing from more than 64 ships with working cockpits and customizable weapon loadouts.
Fate of the Galaxy includes interconnected story campaigns, customizable galaxy-spanning campaigns, arcade and training scenarios, standalone missions, and LAN multiplayer. A mission editor also lets players create and share their own space battles.
The game offers a wide range of settings, from casual play to more simulation-focused experiences. It supports multiple difficulty levels, different control methods, and virtual reality headsets.
The team emphasizes that Fate of the Galaxy is fully open-source and that all of its assets were made by humans. That makes it a rare fan project built entirely through volunteer work rather than commercial development or generative AI tools.
The game builds on a long tradition of FreeSpace 2 mods. Volition released the 1999 space combat sim’s source code, leading to projects such as the Battlestar Galactica-inspired Beyond the Red Line and the Babylon 5-based The Babylon Project.
For Star Wars fans looking for a free, deep space combat experience, Fate of the Galaxy may be one of the year’s most impressive community releases.
