Dead by Daylight is facing a growing community controversy after one of its community managers gifted streamer and VTuber TheBurntPeanut access to all of the game's content over Halloween weekend. The move prompted criticism from players who questioned the decision, particularly given the streamer's reputation and the behavior of some members of his online community.
Behaviour Interactive, the studio behind the multiplayer horror game, later issued an apology, explaining that the giveaway had not received the required internal approval. The company also distanced itself from the employee's subsequent comments and conduct, saying they did not reflect the values of Dead by Daylight.
While granting creators access to in-game content so they can preview it is not unusual, Behaviour said this particular decision was made without proper authorization.
The situation attracted even more attention after screenshots circulated showing the community manager telling TheBurntPeanut in Twitch chat: "WE CAN TAKE THE HEAT! THEY ARE YOURS TO KEEP." The exchange quickly became a talking point among players, many of whom questioned why the streamer had been given such extensive access.
The backlash is closely tied to TheBurntPeanut's online reputation. The streamer, who appears on screen as a peanut character with a stylized face, has faced criticism over clips in which he appears to use or joke about using offensive slurs.
Some players have also raised concerns about the tone of his community, pointing to offensive language and anti-woke rhetoric in conversations across social media. For these fans, the free content giveaway felt like an endorsement of a creator whose public image they consider incompatible with the game's community values.
Behaviour Interactive acknowledged the reaction in its statement, saying the decision had led to difficult conversations throughout the Dead by Daylight community. The studio expressed appreciation for players who spoke up about the values they expect the game to uphold, while also condemning the inflammatory language directed at members of the community.
The company also made an important distinction: criticizing a decision is acceptable, but threatening employees is not. Behaviour asked players to stop engaging with threatening posts and confirmed that it had begun reviewing its internal approval processes to prevent similar incidents.
TheBurntPeanut addressed the controversy during a livestream, saying he had seen the negative reactions on social media and was surprised by the response to receiving the free content.
He also pushed back against accusations involving his views on transgender people, saying he could not recall making statements about transgender people during the previous two years of streaming. During the exchange, someone in his chat responded with a remark suggesting he still had time to do so.
The controversy may also be connected to earlier criticism surrounding the streamer's appearance in Fortnite during Pride Month 2026. At the time, an old clip in which he appeared to use an anti-gay slur circulated online, prompting further debate about his public image and the creators featured in major games.
The disagreement has since spilled over into Dead by Daylight itself. Players on opposing sides of the controversy have been posting negative Steam reviews, with some criticizing Behaviour Interactive for granting the streamer free content and others accusing the studio of backing down in response to community pressure.
Some reviewers have framed the issue around the company's treatment of LGBTQ+ players and its broader community values. Others have argued that the studio should not have apologized for giving a creator free content in the first place.
The dispute has also reached the game's official Discord server. Moderators enabled slow mode in the off-topic channel as discussions intensified, while longtime users accused supporters of TheBurntPeanut of flooding the server with arguments.
The controversy has even drawn attention to the behavior of people associated with the game's creator program. One account reportedly described being LGBTQ+ as a "mental illness" before deleting its account.
For Behaviour Interactive, the incident has become more than a question of who receives free in-game items. The studio is now dealing with questions about creator partnerships, internal approval procedures, community expectations, and how to respond when players disagree over the values a game should represent.
