Sony has begun sending direct trade-in offers to some PlayStation users, offering up to $400 for a standard PS5 console and two controllers. The offers appear through notifications in the PlayStation mobile app and allow users to send the money directly to their bank account.
The unusual move stands out because trade-in programs are typically run by retailers such as GameStop rather than platform holders contacting customers directly. Sony has not publicly explained why it is making the offers or how long the program will last.
The timing has led to speculation that Sony may be preparing for hardware shortages or building up refurbished stock ahead of the holiday season. New PS5 consoles currently cost between $600 and $650 depending on whether they include a disc drive, while the PS5 Pro is priced at $900.
Demand for the PS5 Pro has been especially strong ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6’s release, making it difficult to find at its regular retail price. Some resellers and retailers are listing used PS5 Pro consoles for as much as $1,400.
For owners who bought a PS5 early and no longer use it, the offer could be appealing. The original PS5 launched at $500, so receiving up to $400 back—provided the owner also has a second controller—is a relatively strong trade-in value this late in the console’s life.
By comparison, a PS4 owner would not have received close to that amount from a retailer at a similar point in that console’s life cycle. Still, players should compare the offer with local resale prices before accepting, since a working PS5 with games and accessories may sell for more privately.
