Azeroth is opening its gates to a new generation of adventurers. World of Warcraft: Forever has officially launched worldwide, giving both longtime fans and newcomers an opportunity to experience a reimagined version of the iconic MMORPG. Following its announcement at BlizzCon and a successful beta period, the new experience is finally available for players to explore.
But this isn't simply a nostalgic return to the original World of Warcraft. Blizzard has introduced new locations, expanded character customization, additional stories, and progression systems designed to give players more reasons to explore the world beyond reaching the maximum level.
With a renewed focus on the journey from level 1 to 60, WoW: Forever aims to make familiar parts of Azeroth feel exciting again while introducing entirely new adventures.
Blizzard describes the launch as an opportunity for both new and returning players to find their place in the world.
In its official launch announcement, the developer shared:
"Whether you're stepping into World of Warcraft for the first time or finding your way back to Azeroth, there's a place for you."
Blizzard also emphasized the importance of community, describing Forever as a permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW, where exploration and shared experiences are just as important as reaching the next milestone.
The adventure takes place after the events of Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. Players will explore the original continents of Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, experiencing new stories and locations while progressing toward level 60.
One of the biggest additions is the introduction of more than 1,000 quests across the leveling experience. Four new destinations are also available: Mount Hyjal, Shen'dralas, the Riverglades, and Zephras Isle.
Each location offers its own atmosphere, characters, and challenges. Mount Hyjal explores the aftermath of Archimonde's defeat, while Shen'dralas introduces a mystery connected to the Shen'dralar and surrounding regions. The Riverglades offers a rugged frontier filled with struggling communities and new adventures, while Zephras Isle introduces a completely new starting experience for characters.
Character customization is another major part of the new experience. Blizzard has introduced the Skyborne, a completely new playable race also known as the shen'dorei, or hidden people.
Their journey begins on Zephras Isle, where players experience a unique starting storyline from levels 1 through 12. At character creation, Skyborne players can choose between two paths: Horde-aligned Windshapers, who can become Shamans, or Alliance-aligned High-Order Skyborne, who can become Mages.
There are also several new race and class combinations, allowing players to experiment with characters that weren't previously available.
These include:
- Orc Mages
- Troll Warlocks
- Undead Paladins
- Human Hunters
- Gnome Priests
- Dwarf Shamans
For players who enjoy experimenting with different playstyles, these additions offer more freedom to create a character that feels personal rather than simply following familiar class combinations.
Another interesting addition is the ability to choose between two visual and interface presets when first entering the game.
The Classic preset offers a more traditional experience, with simpler visuals, standard character models, and fewer modern interface conveniences. It is designed for players who want something closer to the original World of Warcraft experience.
The Enhanced preset, on the other hand, introduces higher-definition character models and additional interface features, including quest markers, a centralized interface layout, and transmog enabled by default.
Players aren't permanently locked into either choice. Individual settings can be adjusted later, and character models can be switched between standard and high definition.
Blizzard also introduces four initial rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplay, and Roleplay PvP. These options allow players to choose the type of community and gameplay experience they prefer, whether that's focusing on exploration, competing against other players, or immersing themselves in roleplaying.
A Hardcore ruleset, where character deaths carry lasting consequences, is also planned for a later release.
Beyond new locations and character options, World of Warcraft: Forever introduces several systems designed to encourage exploration and interaction.
One of the most interesting additions is the Legacy System, an account-wide progression feature that rewards players for experiencing different aspects of the game. Rather than focusing exclusively on character levels and equipment, it encourages exploration, completing challenges, and developing different characters and professions.
The system includes three main components: Legacy Challenges, Legacy Perks, and Legacy Rewards. Importantly, players don't need to level multiple characters to benefit from it, as its advantages can also be unlocked through a single character.
Another social addition is the Camping System. Players can gather around shared campsites, contribute profession-crafted features, and enjoy certain benefits before continuing their adventures. It's a small but welcome feature that encourages players to spend time together outside dungeons and battlegrounds.
For those who prefer more structured group activities, the launch also introduces nine new five-player dungeons for characters between levels 13 and 60.
Endgame players will have additional challenges to look forward to on December 9, when three raids are scheduled to open: Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit, and Onyxia's Lair.
Blizzard has also improved gamepad support, refining targeting, spellcasting, looting, and menu navigation for players who prefer using a controller.
World of Warcraft: Forever is now available globally. Players with an active World of Warcraft subscription can select their preferred ruleset and begin exploring immediately. Those without a subscription will need to obtain one before joining the adventure.
Whether you're discovering Azeroth for the first time or returning after years away, there's plenty of new content to explore. With additional quests, expanded character options, new social systems, and a renewed focus on exploration, Blizzard is giving players plenty of reasons to rediscover one of gaming's most recognizable fantasy worlds.
And perhaps that's the most interesting part of Forever: instead of simply asking players to relive the past, Blizzard is giving them an opportunity to create new memories in a world they may already know by heart.
Are you planning to explore World of Warcraft: Forever? Would you rather experience Azeroth through the Classic ruleset or try the new features and character combinations? Let us know which adventure you're choosing in the comments!
