Sony Santa Monica has officially delayed God of War Laufey, pushing the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive from February to May 2027. The studio confirmed that the game will now launch on May 20, 2027, giving the development team additional time to refine the experience.
The decision was announced in a statement expressing gratitude for the enthusiasm surrounding Faye’s journey through the Everywhen, as well as appreciation for the continued support of the God of War community.
According to the studio, the additional development time will allow the team to put the finishing touches on the game and bring its full potential to life.
God of War Laufey introduces a fresh perspective on the beloved franchise by placing Faye, Kratos’ wife, at the center of the story.
Originally introduced through her funeral in God of War (2018), Faye became a more prominent character in God of War Ragnarök (2022), where Deborah Ann Woll brought her to life.
The upcoming spinoff will explore Faye’s own journey, taking place alongside the events of the 2018 game and its sequel. Her adventure will lead her through the Everywhen, an afterlife for the gods, where she attempts to help Kratos and their son, Atreus, from beyond the grave.
Woll returns as Faye, joined by Jack Quaid as Phranque, a talking cube, and Perlina Lau as Rue. Christopher Judge will also reprise his role as Kratos, although the character is expected to have a smaller part in this story.
While God of War Laufey retains the franchise’s action-focused gameplay, Faye’s fighting style introduces a more acrobatic approach.
Her combat reportedly draws inspiration from Devil May Cry, emphasizing agile movement and stylish attacks. Faye also possesses the ability to strike enemies so powerfully that their souls are separated from their bodies.
These abilities suggest that Faye will be every bit as formidable as Kratos, while giving players a fresh way to experience the franchise’s signature combat.
The game’s June reveal during PlayStation’s State of Play also confirmed that the spinoff is part of a larger future for the series.
Sony Santa Monica has confirmed that another mainline God of War game starring Kratos is in development, meaning Faye’s adventure will not replace the franchise’s central storyline.
Meanwhile, Amazon is developing a live-action adaptation of the 2018 God of War game, with Dave Bautista reportedly set to portray Kratos.
With multiple projects expanding the franchise across different characters and stories, God of War Laufey represents an opportunity to explore a new side of its mythology.
God of War Laufey is scheduled to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on May 20, 2027.
