Nearly 20 years after its original release, The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) is still welcoming players into Middle-earth with its latest expansion, The Wolves of Mordor.
Released in 2007, the fantasy MMORPG continues to expand its world with new stories, locations, and gameplay features. This time, players will venture deeper into Mordor to face a growing threat tied to the legacy of Sauron.
As its name suggests, The Wolves of Mordor focuses on the werewolves of Mordor, who are hunting those responsible for defeating their master, Sauron.
The expansion takes players beyond Gorgoroth, where they will uncover forgotten secrets and form unexpected alliances. Three new regions are available to explore: Heledhris, Parth Rhavas, and Nan Ogol.
These locations also introduce new skills and enhancements, allowing players to experiment with different combinations and develop a playstyle that suits their preferences. Whether players enjoy refining their combat approach or discovering new ways to tackle challenges, the expansion offers additional opportunities to customize their adventures.
Beyond exploration and combat, The Wolves of Mordor introduces a companion system featuring characters known as Neighbors.
Each Neighbor has distinct personality traits and a dynamic mood system, giving these companions a greater sense of individuality. Players can develop friendships with them as they progress through the game.
These relationships offer more than just company during an adventure. Neighbors can share personal stories, give gifts, and send players on missions, adding another layer of interaction to life in Middle-earth.
For players who enjoy character-driven storytelling and building connections throughout a fantasy world, the new system provides another reason to explore beyond the main quests.
The Wolves of Mordor is available in three editions, with different extras depending on how much players want to invest in their adventures.
- Standard Edition — $40: The base expansion experience.
- Collector's Edition — $80: Includes additional cosmetic items.
- Ultimate Fan Bundle — $130: Offers more cosmetics, additional Neighbor characters, experience boosts, and other bonuses.
The higher-priced editions may appeal to dedicated players who want extra customization options and progression benefits, while the Standard Edition provides a more straightforward way to experience the new content.
LOTRO's latest expansion marks another milestone for a game that has continued evolving since its debut in 2007. Over the years, it has received more than a dozen expansions, steadily expanding its interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved fantasy world.
Originally developed by Turbine, the game began as a subscription-based MMORPG before adopting a free-to-play model in 2010. Its development later moved to Standing Stone Games, while Daybreak Game Company took over its publishing and operational history following changes in ownership.
Although LOTRO has remained active for nearly two decades, it is not the oldest MMORPG still running.
Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft launched in 2004 and continues to operate through a subscription-based model. Meanwhile, Ultima Online, which debuted in 1997, also remains active, demonstrating the lasting appeal of persistent online worlds.
The arrival of The Wolves of Mordor comes as interest in Middle-earth continues across games and entertainment.
Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to return for its third season in November. Meanwhile, Andy Serkis is directing and starring in the upcoming 2027 film The Hunt for Gollum.
The gaming side of the franchise is also looking toward the future. Additional The Lord of the Rings projects are in development, including a new game from Warhorse Studios, the studio behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance, described as a deeply immersive experience.
For fans who have spent years exploring Middle-earth or newcomers looking for a fantasy world filled with lore, adventure, and memorable characters, LOTRO's latest expansion is another opportunity to return to a familiar setting and discover something new.
