December is shaping up to be an exciting month for Dune fans. Alongside the upcoming release of Dune: Part Three on December 18, Funcom is preparing a substantial free expansion for its survival MMO, Dune: Awakening. Titled Blood and Ice, the expansion introduces an entirely new frozen region, additional progression opportunities, and fresh survival challenges.
Blood and Ice takes players beyond the familiar deserts of Arrakis and into the Polar Sink, a new survival map where extreme cold replaces the dangers of scorching temperatures.
Players will need to rethink their survival strategies, as equipment designed to withstand the desert heat won't necessarily provide enough protection against freezing conditions. New resources, upgraded equipment, and alternative approaches to survival will be essential to exploring the region.
The Polar Sink features two distinct biomes: the tundra and the ice cap. Players will begin their journey in the tundra, where conditions are relatively manageable. However, the local factions won't appreciate outsiders interfering with their operations.
The ultimate objective is to reach the ice cap and collect its valuable resources. Among the most important discoveries is ice itself, which can be used to cool base equipment and accelerate production.
Blood and Ice is expected to provide approximately 35 hours of additional gameplay, including new progression opportunities, vehicle modules, augments, and specialization traits.
Funcom also plans to introduce further updates that will give players additional reasons to return to the Polar Sink. This suggests that the frozen region will remain an important part of the game's evolving survival experience.
The expansion will also coincide with the introduction of a new cosmetic store. Players will be able to purchase optional cosmetic items, including outfits, vehicle variants, and additional customization options for their bases.
Another important development is coming before the expansion itself. Dune: Awakening is scheduled to receive an offline mode in November, allowing players to enjoy the game without an internet connection.
This is particularly significant for game preservation. Online-only games can become inaccessible when their servers eventually shut down, potentially leaving players unable to revisit their characters and adventures. An offline option offers a way to keep the experience accessible even without an active connection to the game's servers.
There is more on the way, too. January will bring character copying, allowing players to transfer their existing multiplayer characters into single-player mode. Full cross-play is also planned for the same month.
With a substantial free expansion, an offline option, and additional accessibility features on the roadmap, Dune: Awakening has plenty of changes ahead. Blood and Ice may introduce the coldest environment yet, but the game's future is looking increasingly promising.
