The skateboarding icon planned a nostalgic tribute to his classic video game, but his anniversary celebration at a famous Los Angeles location ended unexpectedly.
Tony Hawk, the legendary skateboarder and face of one of gaming's most beloved sports franchises, had an unexpected interruption while celebrating the 25th anniversary of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3.
Hawk recently visited Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles, a location famously recreated in the 2001 skateboarding game. However, what was supposed to be a fun trip down memory lane ended with security asking him and his filming crew to leave.
Taking to social media, Hawk shared the experience with fans, writing, "Happy 25th THPS3! We got kicked out of Pershing Square while shooting this today."
Although the game never officially names the location, its Los Angeles level is widely recognized as being inspired by Pershing Square. The park's distinctive architecture, curved stone benches, and large red spheres made it an unforgettable setting for players exploring the virtual skateboarding environment.
Designed by architect Ricardo Legorreta, Pershing Square still retains many of the visual features that made it recognizable in the original game. Even a nearby car wash with a large blue obelisk remains part of the area's familiar scenery.
Hawk and his team attempted to recreate some of the game's memorable moments during their visit. Accompanied by the Ramones' Blitzkrieg Bop, the skateboarder rolled through the square, revisiting familiar spots and even imitating the distinctive idle animation of his in-game character.
Unfortunately, the recreation was cut short when security intervened.
Hawk later described the encounter as rather uneventful, explaining that the security guard simply shooed the group away. As he put it, "It was very anticlimactic."
Released in 2001, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 was the first installment in the franchise to arrive on PlayStation 2. It quickly became a fan favorite and remains one of the most highly regarded skateboarding games ever released.
Its reputation extends beyond the franchise, too. The game is tied with Grand Theft Auto 3 as one of the highest-rated PlayStation 2 titles on Metacritic, highlighting its lasting influence on gaming.
In 2025, the classic returned through Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4, a remastered collection developed by Iron Galaxy. While the revival of the earlier games generated considerable excitement, the newer collection received a more mixed response from fans.
Despite the ups and downs of the franchise, Hawk's visit to Pershing Square offered a nostalgic reminder of what made the original games so memorable. For longtime fans, seeing the real-life location alongside the legendary skateboarder himself was a special anniversary moment, even if security had other plans.
The unexpected interruption also made the celebration a little more memorable than anyone had probably anticipated.
