The classic stealth adventure returns with enhanced visuals, expanded content, and an entirely new horror-inspired campaign for longtime fans and newcomers.
Fans of classic stealth games have a date to mark on their calendars. Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is officially launching on December 3, bringing the influential 1998 adventure back with modern enhancements, additional content, and a brand-new campaign.
Developed through a collaboration between Nightdive Studios, Eidos-Montréal, and Atari, the remaster aims to preserve the atmosphere and gameplay that helped establish the stealth genre while making the experience accessible to a new generation.
Built using Nightdive Studios' KEX Engine, the remaster brings together the original Thief: The Dark Project and the additional missions, content, and updates introduced in the 1999 Thief Gold release.
The updated version also includes The Tarnished Mirror, an entirely new standalone story campaign designed to connect the events of Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age.
The new campaign comes from the creators of Thief: The Black Parade, one of the most ambitious fan-made expansions in PC gaming history. Interestingly, this collaboration marks a rare moment in gaming, as a community-created project has received an official place within the franchise's canon.
The Tarnished Mirror begins with what appears to be a straightforward theft. However, things quickly take a darker turn as players find themselves facing imprisonment, forming uneasy alliances, and exploring a mysterious, drowned necropolis inspired by the fictional city of R'lyeh.
The campaign introduces an expanded selection of enemies, new factions and environments, larger and more ambitious level designs, and Lovecraftian horror elements that add an unsettling atmosphere. It also features a new storyline that bridges the first two Thief games.
Despite these additions, the expansion aims to maintain the familiar stealth-focused gameplay that made the original adventure memorable.
Players who enjoy experimenting with community content will also be pleased to know that the remaster supports player-created mods, including The Black Parade.
Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will offer several purchasing options, giving players a choice between the standard experience and collectible editions.
The Standard Digital Edition costs $29.99 and includes the base game and its additional content. Players looking for extra digital collectibles can choose the Deluxe Digital Edition for $34.99, which includes the game, a digital art book, the official soundtrack, and an excerpt from an upcoming novelization.
Physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 are also available for pre-order. The Standard Physical Edition costs $29.99 and includes the base game, while the Steelbook Edition costs $39.99 and adds a Steelbook case and printed manual.
Collectors can also consider the Deluxe Trapezoid Edition for $69.99, which includes the base game, Steelbook, printed manual, and a Remaster Diary. Its packaging recreates the distinctive trapezoid-shaped big-box design used for the original 1998 release, offering a nostalgic touch for longtime fans.
Thief: The Dark Project Remastered launches on December 3, 2026, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Play Anywhere, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.
Nintendo Switch owners will also be able to upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for free. Additionally, physical Nintendo Switch 2 editions will remain playable on the original Nintendo Switch.
With updated presentation, classic missions, mod support, and a completely new campaign, Thief: The Dark Project Remastered offers plenty of reasons to revisit one of gaming's most influential stealth adventures.
