Bethesda has officially confirmed the title of its next major RPG: The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel. Todd Howard announced the name in a video celebrating Bethesda Softworks’ 40th anniversary, ending years of speculation about the long-awaited follow-up to Skyrim.
The confirmation comes after fans had already begun predicting the subtitle. An earlier Starfield Easter egg and a social media post from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma had led many to believe Sentinel was the game’s title, and Howard’s announcement now makes it official.
The reveal includes a short teaser showing a scroll buried beneath a sand dune, strongly suggesting that Sentinel will take place in Hammerfell. The desert province is home to the Redguards, and its landscape fits the imagery shown in the video.
A quote displayed after the logo also points to the game’s setting: “Sands of time scattered by fate,” spoken by a Moth Priest serving the High Queen of Hammerfell. The quote is dated 206 of the Fourth Era, placing the story five years after the events of Skyrim.
Reports suggest Sentinel will focus on the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves—the mysterious magical artifacts that give the series its name. These objects can contain records of the past or prophecies of the future, but their true origins have never been fully explained.
That focus could give the sequel a more central role for the franchise’s lore than previous entries, where the Scrolls often served as plot devices rather than the main subject of the story.
Despite the title reveal, Bethesda did not share a trailer, gameplay footage, or release window. The game was first announced in 2018, and recent reporting has suggested it may still be years away from completion.
Even so, the announcement is a meaningful step forward for a franchise that has been largely silent for eight years. Fans now have a confirmed name, a likely setting, and a clearer sense of the story’s direction—even if the wait for Sentinel is far from over.
