The iconic looter-shooter franchise reaches a major sales milestone while rewarding fans with free in-game items and celebrating a record-breaking charity effort.
The Borderlands franchise has officially surpassed 100 million copies sold worldwide, marking an impressive milestone for 2K and Gearbox Software. The achievement celebrates more than a decade of chaotic adventures, memorable characters, and countless unusual weapons that have helped establish the series as one of gaming's most recognizable looter-shooters.
Since the original Borderlands launched in 2009, the franchise has continued to grow through multiple mainline releases and spin-offs. Its combination of first-person shooting, RPG-style progression, and procedurally generated weapons has attracted a dedicated community that continues to support the series.
The latest milestone follows the release of Borderlands 4 on September 11, 2026, which has further expanded the franchise with new content, characters, and gameplay features. However, sales are not the only reason fans have something to celebrate.
Gearbox and 2K officially announced the 100 million sales achievement, thanking players for supporting the franchise throughout its journey. The developers also highlighted the continued expansion of Borderlands 4, which has introduced two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs, two additional Vault Hunters, and several new features.
To mark the occasion, Gearbox is giving players 20 Golden Keys for each of five participating games:
- Borderlands
- Borderlands 2
- Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
- Borderlands 3
- Borderlands 4
Players who own all five titles can collect up to 100 Golden Keys in total. These keys can be redeemed using the following SHiFT code:
CZKJJ-35RH6-T9K9C-9TJJT-SXRCT
The code is valid until November 16, 2026, and can only be redeemed once per account. Players interested in claiming the rewards should make sure to redeem it before the deadline.
Beyond its commercial success, the Borderlands community has also made a meaningful contribution outside the gaming world.
Earlier in 2026, fans raised an impressive $118,995.80 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through The Hunt, a long-running charity fundraising event supported by the franchise's community.
There is even more good news for the next edition. 2K Foundations and Gearbox have pledged to match every dollar donated, up to the amount raised during the previous event. The next fundraising event is scheduled to begin on November 6, 2026.
With the matching contributions, the initiative has the potential to raise more than $200,000 for the hospital, giving the community another opportunity to make a positive difference.
Reaching 100 million copies sold is a remarkable achievement for any gaming franchise, particularly one with such a distinctive personality and unconventional humor. However, the milestone also highlights the strength of a community that has remained engaged through multiple releases over the years.
With additional content already part of the franchise's ongoing plans, there is plenty for fans to look forward to. The combination of continued game development, free rewards, and charitable initiatives also demonstrates how a successful gaming series can build something meaningful beyond the screen.
For Borderlands, the 100 million sales milestone is more than a commercial achievement. It is also a celebration of the players who have supported the franchise and helped turn its community into a force for good.
