The classic stealth adventure returns with upgraded visuals, modern controls, and special physical editions, bringing Garrett's legendary heists to a new generation.
The shadows are calling once again. Thief: The Dark Project Remastered has officially received a release date, with Eidos-Montréal, Atari, and Nightdive Studios confirming that the classic stealth adventure will launch on December 3.
Originally released in 1998 by Looking Glass Studios, Thief: The Dark Project helped shape the stealth genre during an era when action-heavy shooters dominated the gaming scene. Rather than relying on constant gunfights and explosive encounters, the game encouraged players to think carefully, move quietly, and use the darkness to their advantage.
Alongside other influential stealth franchises such as Metal Gear Solid, Hitman, and Tenchu, Thief helped establish a different kind of gaming experience where patience, strategy, and clever decision-making could be just as rewarding as combat.
Set in a fictional world inspired by the Victorian era, the story follows Garrett, a highly skilled master thief trained from an early age. Players step into his shoes as he sneaks through heavily guarded locations, steals valuable treasures from powerful figures, and uncovers a mysterious conspiracy threatening to change the foundations of his world.
What begins as a series of carefully planned robberies gradually develops into a much larger story involving political intrigue, hidden forces, and dangerous secrets.
Nightdive Studios aims to preserve the original game's careful, methodical approach to stealth while introducing several improvements for modern hardware.
The remaster will feature upgraded visuals supporting 4K resolution and 60 FPS, alongside an updated control scheme designed to make the experience more comfortable for contemporary players.
Additional quality-of-life features include:
- Modernized UI: A refreshed interface for easier navigation.
- New Weapon Wheel: A more convenient way to select equipment.
- Level Selector: Allows players to access different stages more easily.
- Behind-the-Scenes Vault: Offers a closer look at the game's development.
- Custom Campaign Designer: Gives players the opportunity to create their own adventures.
These additions aim to make the classic experience more accessible without losing the atmosphere and precision that made the original so memorable.
Collectors will also have something to look forward to, as publisher Clear River Games is preparing physical editions of Thief: The Dark Project Remastered.
The standout option is the Trapezoid Edition, which includes:
- A physical copy of the game for PS5 or Nintendo Switch.
- A Steelbook case.
- A remaster diary.
- A unique trapezoid-shaped collector's box.
A separate Steelbook-only edition will also be available. Preorders are already open through Clear River Games and selected online retailers.
Thief: The Dark Project Remastered launches December 3 for PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
With enhanced visuals, updated controls, and additional features, Garrett's return offers longtime fans a chance to revisit a beloved stealth classic while introducing a new generation of players to one of the genre's influential adventures.
