PS5 Gets AI Upscaling as QSSR Comes to Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei!
Sony is bringing a lighter form of AI upscaling, Quick Spectral Super Resolution, to the standard PS5. It aims to sharpen fine detail and reduce shimmer, starting with Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.

AI upscaling on PlayStation has so far been limited to the PS5 Pro, but that is changing. Sony has announced that Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a streamlined version of the technology, is coming to the base PS5. Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei will be the first games to support it.

Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling, developed with AMD as part of Project Amethyst. According to Sony, it uses a simplified neural network and a carefully tuned implementation built to run efficiently on standard PS5 hardware. The aim is better image detail and stability without needing the dedicated AI chip found in the PS5 Pro.

In practice, this should mean sharper distant objects and cleaner fine detail. A demo clip from Wolverine shows faraway buildings in dense city areas looking crisper and less blurry. Insomniac's head of tech said QSSR adds "pixel-level clarity and stability" to the busy streets and narrow alleyways throughout Logan's journey.

A second clip, this time from Ghost of Yōtei, shows reeds beside a pond with better edge definition and less noise. How noticeable these improvements are during regular play will depend on your screen and how far you sit from it.

QSSR is rolling out now as a new graphics option in both games on PS5. Sony is also making the technology available to all developers on the platform, though each studio will decide whether and how to use it. How widely it gets adopted in upcoming releases remains to be seen.
