Steam players hoping for something in the spirit of the Grand Theft Auto games from the PlayStation 2 era may want to keep an eye on ALATURKA. Steam is one of the largest gaming platforms in the world and, by a wide margin, the largest on PC. Even so, Grand Theft Auto 6, which GameRant calls the biggest new game release of 2026, will not be coming to the platform at launch.
GTA 6 is launching this November, but Rockstar Games is not releasing a PC version at the same time. That means Steam users will have to wait until 2027 at the earliest to play it on their preferred platform. In the meantime, there are a number of alternatives available, and ALATURKA is set to join that list, although it does not have a release date yet.
ALATURKA's visuals resemble a PS2-era GTA game, and its retro look contrasts with the hyperrealistic direction Rockstar has taken with GTA 6. The game takes place in the open world of Bosforus, where players step into the role of a delivery driver working for their uncle. As with the games that inspired it, the job soon leads to less legal work, which can mean running from the police. Players will also have a range of vehicles to drive and NPCs to interact with. According to GameRant, the game looks likely to appeal to fans of classic GTA, though how the finished product turns out remains to be seen.
The game's 1970s setting is one of its more notable features, as modern GTA games have not covered that decade. Grand Theft Auto 3 was set in the early 2000s, Vice City in the 1980s and San Andreas in the 1990s, while GTA 4, 5 and 6 each take place in the period they were released. GameRant notes that this setting could help ALATURKA set itself apart from the games it draws from.
GameRant also raises the question of whether Rockstar will ever return to a historical setting for GTA. With the last three main series entries all set in the present day, the outlet considers it unlikely, though not impossible. Rockstar may instead explore earlier eras through its other franchises, such as the Red Dead Redemption series, which is set in the Old West. There are also rumors that Rockstar may be developing an L.A. Noire sequel, and GameRant suggests that, if true, it would likely be set somewhere between the 1940s and 1960s.
It is still unclear what Rockstar's next project will be. GTA 6 has been in the works for a long time and is expected to be the studio's main focus for years to come. In the meantime, indie games inspired by Rockstar's work, like ALATURKA, can give fans something familiar with a few twists of their own.
