The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is receiving a new physical release more than 15 years after its original launch. Aspyr has confirmed Standard and Deluxe Editions of the game, which includes the enhanced Legacy Edition previously released digitally. The physical editions are being produced through Limited Run Games. Pre-orders opened on October 2, 2026, and will remain available until December 13 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. The releases are planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, with the Switch 2 version arriving on a cartridge rather than a disc.
The Standard Edition costs $49.99 and includes the Legacy Edition, an O-ring slipcover, and an eight-page Wayfinder’s Ledger booklet. The $79.99 Deluxe Edition includes all of those items, along with a steelbook case, a full-color cloth map, and a weathered letter featuring a foreword by actor Jed Brophy. War in the North originally launched in 2011 and has had an unusually difficult history. The game reportedly performed poorly commercially, and it was removed from some digital storefronts in 2018. Licensing concerns were widely considered a possible reason for its disappearance.
The game returned digitally in August 2026 under a new publisher and received positive user feedback. The physical release now gives longtime fans and collectors another opportunity to experience the cooperative Lord of the Rings adventure. The Legacy Edition has been updated for modern hardware and runs at 60 frames per second. Aspyr has also corrected numerous bugs and glitches while improving the game’s visual presentation.
Several quality-of-life features have been added as well. Players can switch between the three playable characters during combat, while the updated interface, autosave system, and additional save slots make the adventure easier to manage. The PS5 and Nintendo Switch versions also support gyro and motion controls. The physical release follows two other Lord of the Rings adaptations arriving on Nintendo Switch 2. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition and Middle-earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition launched for the system on September 30.
With Embracer Group’s parent company now owning Middle-earth Enterprises, further ports, remasters, or re-releases of older Lord of the Rings games remain possible. For now, War in the North’s return is notable not only for fans of the series but also for collectors as physical media becomes less common across the games industry.
